The Expanse Movement Arts Festival is dancing into Edmonton next week, from February 26 to March 1, 2009. Boasting a wide array of talent over four days, Expanse is one of the only festivals of its kind in the city.

Expanse Promotes Diversity and Originality

The festival’s website proclaims: “Expanse exists to inspire, investigate and showcase new work in dance and body based performance; bringing artists and audiences from diverse backgrounds together in the spirit of innovation.”

And diverse it is; this year’s festival offers performances from over fifteen different performers, including Edmonton’s KO Dance Project, Isis Productions, Trevor Schmidt, Cheryl Jameson, Dave Clarke, and Linda Turnbull, Toronto’s Jenn Goodwin, Harriet Macauley from London, England, and more.

Events at The Expanse Movement Arts Festival

The Expanse Festival begins on February 26 with a jam-packed opening night, complete with two performances, a silent auction, food and refreshments, and a live band to close out the evening. Then, from Friday to Sunday, you can enjoy various dance performances, from short to full-length pieces.

Some of the highly anticipated programs this year include “My Song”, choreographed by Linda Turnbull and performed by Jacci Collins, Raena Waddell, Eryn Tempest, and Amber Bissonnette. “My Song” is an interactive performance that examines the lives of everyday people who also happen to dance for a living.

Unpredictable Edmonton choreographer Kathy Ochoa, who has spent 15 years dancing and training all over the world, also comes to Expanse with “Collision: A Live Human Laboratory.”

All performances are taking place at the historic Roxy Theatre (10708-124 Street), and all tickets cost just $15 each. If you plan to take in the entire weekend, both day passes and festival passes are also available. You can phone The Roxy Box Office for ticket information: (780) 453-2440.

Audience Participation at Expanse

In addition to attending the festival’s amazing dance performances, audience members are also given the opportunity to participate in a number of movement workshops. On Saturday, February 28, you can take part in “Out of Your Seat” (at 10:00am), or “Brave New Brain (at 12:00pm), and on Sunday, March 1, you are encouraged to experience “The Art of Yoga” with Geha Gonthier. All workshops are pay-what-you-can – yet another reason to take advantage of the opportunity!

Immerse yourself in new dance this February! For more information on the festival and its performances, check out the Expanse Movement Arts Festival’s Facebook page, which includes a full schedule and list of prices.
